What do you do with watches you don't wear?

So apparently the human mind is a weird and predictable thing; we come to prefer a few things more than others. In this case, my point is about watches (of course).

What does one normally do with extra watches one doesn't wear often? Sell them? Store them? Give them away?

In this case I discovered that I am finding some of my watches are simply not on my wrist at all and thought it would be a waste to just leave them as it is collecting dust. Then the other part of me still love them, and want to keep them, and just for in case they can become family heirlooms that I could pass down to my son, when watches are all smart solar electronic devices that could even operate the kitchen sink by then, so a mechanical or even a normal Quartz would be an item of curiousity. (What, dad, your watches only has one or two functions?? How do you even get by the day back then?)

I wanna slap myself for thinking that way, that having too many watches and getting rid of them, but then I'm partially right. We only have 2 wrists after all.

My Trifecta of PVD Orients

Here are my three Orients. And here's how they compare with each other -

Orient 'Flight' ER2A001B0 PVD

Build quality of all three are generally good, but the case that 'feels' most solid, to me at least, for reasons that don't understand myself is the Orient Flight. Perhaps it's the brushed finished followed by the PVD, and the feel of its crown, it feels just so much better. The screw-down caseback is solid as well, which helps it in its solidity in feel. The Flight also feels better on the wrist than the other two. It is marginal, as in the other two aren't bad, but this one feels the best, and has the best size on my 6.5 inch wrist. It wears smaller than its size too. Of all three, the Flight feels the best on the wrist, and to adjust. Too bad it can't handwind, I would totally handwind it often.

The lume when compared to the other two, sits in the middle between the Wingman and the Ray Raven. Unfortunately, this doesn't mean it is legible in the darkness. Surprisingly, after a while in the darkness, the dial numerals are quite hard to make out especially when the watch is sat on the bedside table and I have just woken up with blurry eyes trying to make out what time it is - I can't make out the double digits on the dial and even the triangle, and it took a while to really focus on the triangle to get the bearing of which is where. In this respect, unfortunately the dotted lume on the Ray and the clearly marked 3, 6 and 9 lines on the Wingman made it easier to orient (pun not intended! heh) the time, even with the extremely weak lume of the Wingman. The Ray is clearly the winner in legibility in the dark, followed by the Wingman (surprisingly).

As mentioned before, the black leather strap that came with it was thick, and feels pretty comfortable on the wrist, but it feels too much like compressed foam to me. I've yet to change them to something nicer.

Orient 'Wingman' CER2D001B PVD
Best dial of the bunch, in terms of legibility in lit conditions for time of day. Just one glance and you'd be able to tell the time, even from very far away. The worst part is the very poor lume - the numbers and markers barely glow at all, and the hands had lume that were so thin it looked cracked when glowing. However, that doesn't mean it wasn't legible in the darkness - due to the markers at 3,6,9 and the triangle at 12, if I woke up in the middle of the night, I still am able to get the orientation right and read the time off the faintest glow it could master.

The screw-down caseback was polished but not solid with logo laser etched. Price considered, it wasn't bad - but nothing to write much about. The crown isn't screwed in so therefore only 30M at best water resistance. The crystal seems to be of a cheaper variety as well compared to the other two - it seems a bit less clear and has a tiny amount of fogginess to it. Not too much to be noticeable, but I think its there. Emphasis on I think.

The original leather strap that came with it was not too bad either, all things considered. I've changed that to a tan strap with a PVD deployant buckle. It looks badass this way, even though the deployant actually doesn't save any time putting it on, like I had originally thought.

Orient 'Ray Raven' CEM65007B PVD

The Ray Raven had the best lume of the bunch and night time legibility. By far. Because each lume is a dot, glowing intensely green and a trapezoid 12 o'clock marker, with bright hands the watch was most legible in the darkness, even after some time had passed and the lumes had weakened. The screw down caseback is not solid but looks to be laser etched. Of course, the best part of this watch is the rotating bezel.

The case is polished and its PVD is excellent. The PVD on the bracelet that came with it however, seemed lacking. Anyway, problem solved as I've changed it to a silicone strap for water adventures. Naturally the 200M resistance gives complete confidence near water, this is one watch where I use water to clean it.

The Ray wears smallest. The crown wasn't as nice to the touch as on the Flight.

Nitpicks

It's just my opinion, but I think the Orient font and logo should be the same size as on the Ray for the Flight and Wingman. They were just a tad too large. That said, they could have the option to not use the italics for the "Automatic" and "Water Resist" fonts, and in this case with the Flight, moved the logo to the crown, for a cleaner dial like all "Type B" Aviator watches.

Vintage Sandoz Automatik

Wow, dieser ist alt. Ich weiß nicht wie alt, aber es ist definitiv sehr alt. Siehe, mein Vater Sandoz Automatik. Ich habe noch nie von dem Namen Sandoz gehört, aber anscheinend gibt es ihn schon seit 1870 . Sandoz wurde in den 1970er Jahren in mehrere Unternehmen aufgeteilt, laut Wikipedia , die alle Sandoz nannten, aber aufgrund von Lizenzen in 4 Produktionsbereiche aufgeteilt wurden. Dies wurden 4 separate Marken, Sandoz Singapur, Sandoz Hong Kong, Sandoz Swiss und Sandoz Spanien, jeweils mit einer eigenen Produktlinie.


Nun, das bedeutet, dass ich hier nur rate, dass diese Uhr entweder eine der Post-1970s oder die der 1970er Jahre ist. Da die Uhr das "Swiss Made" hat, ist es vielleicht das Schweizer. Aber wirklich, ich habe keine Ahnung.

Bedingung:
Als ich es gefunden habe, ist die zweite Hand leider abgefallen. Und es tickt nicht. Ich kann es wickeln, aber es wird nicht funktionieren. Ich habe es seitdem ein bisschen aufgeräumt und es zu meinem Uhrmann gebracht, um es sich anzusehen. Er sagt, er kann etwas Rost sehen (oh, oh), aber wenn das klar wird, scheint da nichts anderes zu sein. Hoffentlich können wir es beheben.

Die Lasche an der unteren linken Seite hat sich ebenfalls gebogen, wahrscheinlich als Ergebnis eines Sturzes. Mein Uhrmann sagt, dass er das nicht anfassen wird, da er nicht dafür haftbar gemacht werden will, dass er es abbricht ... fairerweise. Nun, wir werden sehen, wie das funktionieren wird. SIHH 2018 Will Feature Public Day & More Exhibitors Than Ever

Are we pumped for SIHH 2018 yet? Just like the “holiday shopping season” and beginning around the same time, it seems like the new-product announcements get earlier every year. With still more than a month to go, the 2018 models that we will get to see in Geneva in January have already started coming in. The Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) watch industry trade show, just like its organizing body the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie (FHH), has continued to grow and evolve each year, adding more brands as well as a day where the show is open to the public for the first time in 2017 – this time around, it will be Friday, January 19th, 2018. Now with a total of 35 brands, SIHH 2018 promises even more variety than in previous years.



While Audemars Piguet has obtained quite a bit of flak in the past for what some collectors perceive as milking the Royal Oak fame a little too much, I believe the choice available within the range is a great thing. Not everyone can afford a tourbillon chronograph, and not everyone wants just a time-only watch. At least the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak collection provides both as well as many other choices, with broadly similar aesthetics. The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Tourbillon Chronograph Openworked Material Great watch comes with a bracelet of the identical substance as the case and an additional alligator leather strap. Vis-à-vis Baselworld – where around 300 brands represent the breadth of the watch industry from high-end and mainstream to obscure startups – SIHH has always carefully maintained an image of exclusivity and “prestige.”

So, while a few brands do introduce models in the “mid-level luxury” range that the average person might be able to consider saving up for and possibly actually wearing… you can expect a lot of skeletonization, avant-garde designs, artisanal techniques and haute horology finishing, “high complications,” precious materials, and stratospheric prices. Haute horlogerie is in the name, after all. It has largely been a spectator’s show for fans of high-end watchmaking, but with recent industry trends emphasizing more “down-to-earth” (it’s all relative) models, some balance and variety can at least be hoped for.

This is a watch that is so known to many of you, perhaps it doesn’t require much of an analysis — but this is HODINKEE and you can believe you are gonna get one. The Royal Oak Chronograph is a wristwatch that has tens of thousands of lovers all over the world, and a few detractors, too. The Royal Oak and Royal Oak Offshore families frequently appeal to quite different individuals, but I will get to this shortly. Within this review, I tackle a mainstay at the AP lineup, and also an interesting piece of haute horology, though one without its own in-house motion. I’ll have a look at just how this 41mm column-wheel, vertical clutch chronograph wears, and if the matter of where the movement came from is even something worth noting at all. The Richemont Group along with some independent brands long represented the handful of SIHH exhibitors. However, the show’s 2016 edition added a “Carré des Horlogers” section with nine “artisan-creators and independent workshops” and expanded that number in 2017. This year, the Carré des Horlogers brands are up to no fewer than 17, with the primary exhibitors (referred to as “Historic Maisons”) at 18 for a total, again, of 35. The primary exhibitors are joined by Hermes, and the Carré des Horlogers adds five brands with Armin Strom, DeWitt, Ferdinand Berthoud, Élégante by F.P.Journe, and Romain Gauthier. From a media perspective, Baselworld has tended to spread our resources very thinly in past years with simply too much to cover at once, so with some prominent brands having moved from Baselworld to SIHH, we can hope for some balance between the shows. Around 20,000 visitors are expected this year, and the FHH promises improved facilities and connectivity in order to make our job of bringing you high quality content more efficient – so we’ll see what that’s like in January. That’s just a glimpse into our point of view in preparing for the show.
